When she was in Liz’s buggy and they were headed down the drive from the bishop's house, Isla could hold it in no longer. "I'm pregnant.”

Liz took her eyes off the road and stared at her with open mouth and eyes wide open. “You're what?"

"Pregnant.”

She pulled the buggy to the side of the road and stopped.

“Keep driving. Hilda might be watching.”

Liz clicked the horse on. "I'm in shock. How did this happen.”

"The usual way.”

"That's not what I meant."

"Well, it wasn't planned. It happened the day before he died and I guess no one would've ever known that we didn't wait until we were married if he hadn’t died."

"That's no surprise. You came back to the community from living amongst the Englisch. Everyone assumed you might have been living together anyway.”

"Did they?"

"Jah.”

"Well, we weren't.”

"That doesn't matter. What matters is you’re having a boppli. That's wunderbaar."

"Really? You really think it is?"

Her sister nodded.

"Well it's still quite early. You’re the first person to know. Well, one of the first people to know."

"Who else knows?”

“The doctor for one. And me..." Isla quickly changed the subject, not wanting to let her know how close she’d become with James. "Should I tell Mamm and Dat now, or wait?"

"That's up to you."

Isla sighed. “I'm finding it increasingly hard to make up my mind about anything.”

"That's the hormones for you.” Her sister giggled.

"I guess I'll have to visit Carmen soon.”

"You should."

"I’ve got a million questions to ask you about the birth. I'm scared."

"Carmen will help you with that. She always says to relax and go with the pain rather than fight against it. The more stiff your body is, the worse the pain is and it's harder for the baby."

Isla grimaced. "I’ll worry about all of that later. Firstly, I have to get a job for few months, and I'll work up until the baby is born, so we’ll have enough money to live off.”

“Oh! Peter is looking for someone else to work in his furniture store. It's just three days a week, though."

Peter, Liz's husband, owned an Amish furniture store that was right by the farmers markets.

"Really? Do you think he’d consider me?"

"I'd say he would. I can drive you in there now to talk with him. I think he’d give you the job happily, especially since you’re family."

"Jah, could we go in now? That would be wonderful! Thank you, Liz."
